From studying to working with Plymouth University

I have studied both my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at Plymouth University, whilst working in part-time roles on campus and in the city of Plymouth. Studying and working simultaneously has improved my employability skills; I've become more confident, better at public speaking and my time management skills have all improved.

Whilst undertaking postgraduate study I found difficulty in applying for jobs; it's unnatural for me to sell myself on paper since most of my jobs have been in the hospitality sector. To help, I visited careers advisors in the Careers & Employability Hub in the Roland Levinsky Building. Throughout the meetings I learnt how to demonstrate my skills and competencies in a manner that recruiters look for, boosting my confidence in writing CVs and completing application forms. Also on offer are Accelerate workshops which are bookable at, these free workshops range from LinkedIn to psychometric test tips – great for when applying for graduate jobs!

Towards the end of my postgraduate degree, an opportunity arose to work within Plymouth University's Careers & Employability service. Owing to my brilliant experiences with the service, I wanted to help other undergrad and postgrad students who may be less confident in recruitment processes as I was.

In my current role I help co-ordinate Plymouth University's Student Ambassadors who are responsible for welcoming guests on our Open Days and representing the student voice of Plymouth University. This feels natural to be as I used to be a Student Ambassador myself! Further to this, I assist in the management of our new jobs board containing part-time roles from around the city which will suit students alongside their studies.

I have always had a flair for customer service; I get a great sense of pride when I know that I have helped provide a great experience to a customer, or in this scenario, a student. I'm working in a great team and I hope that other students will engage with the Careers & Employability Service – come see us in the Hub!
