“Make sure you read your book!”
These are the words I hear from my mother each time I’m about to make the commute back to Uni from my family home in Croydon, South London (the greatest place on Earth).
We step out of our nest, some of us travelling hundreds of miles from where we call home to attain this beautiful thing we call education. We all have to be focused on the goal of achieving our degree, but that ain’t all Uni life has to offer!! In this blog I hope I can challenge you to not only study hard but also enrich your experience with whatever else makes you happy and contributes to rounding off your character.
I first realised that I had an opportunity to take a hobby of mine to a new level when I started sharing little bits of music I had made with some friends. I came to uni to study healthcare – I had never sang or rapped before, never played an instrument, I couldn’t tell you whether a cello was a big violin thing or if it was a new slang the kids use to describe a mobile phone.
Anyway, I kept making music with other students around the uni and I really enjoyed it. I started making music videos and performing a little here and there and generally having a good time outside of my course. I’m really happy I used the little bits of spare time I had to actually make memories and learn skills – I would urge anyone reading this to do the same.
Let me slap down some facts:
- There are over 100 UPSU societies catering to all sorts of different groups. If you’re not really feeling any of them, you can even start your own.
- In university you have the opportunity to access possibly the largest network of people you may ever meet in your life. Everybody is studying some sort of skill or profession and you have a great chance to make friends, network and learn a lot from them.
- Huge amounts of the Uni’s budget is thrown at sports, leisure and culture. Why? Because it is a very important aspect of our development. What a shame it would be to not take advantage of these resources…
What I’m trying to say is that if you want to learn a new skill or take a hobby to a new level, you couldn’t possibly find a better place to do it! In my experience, I’ve found that the extra little things I’ve done during my time at uni have given me a whole set of tools to navigate the world which my degree couldn’t offer.
So whether you want to take up a sport…
Or try a new hobby…
Or join a society…
Make sure you make good use of your spare time and enrich your uni experience. But amongst all of the fun, still keep your eyes on the prize and go grab that degree big homie.
Stay blessed and flex always,
