Some of you might have settled into the big city now and are wondering what else there is to do other than attend your lectures, seminars, tutorials and the library… Well, we have some good news for you – as regulars on the Plymouth scene for everything food, drink and entertainment related, we’ve got a good idea of where to go during the week. Below is a list that you might want to refer to on a rainy day or when you need to get out of your accommodation!
Stereotypically, everyone hates Mondays – it’s the start of a busy, long week and you worry about what might lie ahead. But, it doesn’t have to be that way! After a long day at uni, you might not be wanting to cook anything – why not take advantage of 50% off at Wildwood on Derrys Cross with a valid NUS card. The ‘Wild Bore & Chorizo Burger’ is amazing, and with it being half price – why wouldn’t you want to take a trip down there? If you’re a bit more hardcore and fancy a night out, it’s PRYZM’s official student night, ‘Bear Naked’, on a Monday so you’ll find fellow colleagues getting their groove on in the Vinyl Room!
Everyone knows Tuesdays are all about Dominos’ BOGOF offer, so it seems the perfect evening to recover from a heavy night out with a pizza and then Netflix ‘n’ Chill. If you fancy something a bit more exciting, Tenpin in the Barbican Leisure Park have 50% off bowling which is a great place to hang out with friends due to the cheap drinks, pool tables and arcade.
Wednesday is hump day, you’re half way through the week – and there is no better way to celebrate than going out! All of Plymouth’s clubs and bars will be buzzing on a Wednesday and all of the sports societies will be out in full force! Most students end up in PRZYM for a ‘Pound In’ session or to the Aussie bar Walkbout for Plymouth’s famous ‘Heroes’ night.
Student nights are usually the most popular nights to go-out due to being better value for money and therefore attracting larger crowds and a 'party' atmosphere. If going out isn’t your thing, Compare the Market have 2-4-1 cinema tickets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. You need to have purchased a product through their site in order to qualify.
Tip: Buy one day’s worth of travel insurance and then follow the activation instructions on the site. It costs you just a couple of quid and gives you 2-4-1 tickets on a Tuesday/Wednesday for a whole year!
The SU hosts an 'open mic night' on a Thursday evening, which is a great time to chill with friends and support some local talent. And with very reasonable prices too, you might even want to enjoy a pint or two! Plymouth’s mall, Drake Circus, is open until 8pm on Thursdays too – so it is the perfect time to get a last minute outfit for the evening ahead.
The weekend has nearly arrived! It’s a perfect opportunity to make use of Plymouth's fantastic sights. Plymouth Hoe is a great place to visit, whether you want to take a walk along the promenade or sit on the grass and watch the ships come in, it’s a refreshing spot to feel the sea breeze. Smeaton's Tower is open for you to climb too, allowing you to walk all the way to the top and experience views of the sea and City Centre from a height like no other! Whatever the weather, you're bound to find a cheeky ice cream van parked up close-by too – its never too cold for a 99 Flake.
Plymouth is so close to Cornwall, so it’s a great opportunity taken a trip across the border and experience some of their world-class beaches. Whitsands is a personal favourite of ours, just a 20 minute drive away and enough sand to keep Chester occupied for hours!
With it being the New Year, we're sure many of you will have resolutions to become fitter (we've already tried and failed unfortunately – but good luck!) We're lucky to have a gym on campus that might be appealing to some of you, with varying memberships available to suit every type of student. Situated at the Nancy Astor Sports Centre, it’s the ideal place to go any day of the week to burn a few calories and get fit. There are plenty of classes that run throughout the week as well if you need a little bit more of a push like us! If you are able to travel a little further, The Life Centre is home to some more sports facilities like a climbing wall and swimming pool.
There is loads to do in Plymouth, you just have to go out and find it! We hope some of our experiences have gave you some inspiration when you find yourself with nothing to do. Let us know how you get on!
