The day of Varsity was finally upon us. A month’s preparation has gone into this day, with three weeks of alcohol ban, eight fitness sessions starting at 7:30am, and 15 skills sessions.
Our match was played at Plymstock Albion Oaks RFC. I was picked to start the 2nd’s varsity game against Marjon’s 2nd team. I was selected to play in the second row for the game. The day before the game as a team we went for a meal on the barbican and were presented with our jerseys: I had the number 5 jersey.
The match had a lot of hype before a ball was even kicked on social media. UPRFC had produced player profiles for every player in the 1st team and 2nd’s team. This was a great way to help publicise the game. Even though the game was played further away from the University this year we had a bigger crowd than in 2016.
We thought we had have a really tough game this year, but from the early exchanges we found many holes in their defence and dominated from the start. We went on to win the game at ease with a 41-8 score line. I did not score a try. However, I was involved in the build up to all of them and was proud to say that we didn’t lose a lineout and stole 80% of their lineout.
I was very proud to be a part of this win. I am also extremely proud to say that I have played in two varsity matches and have won both. I hope to play next year and maintain a 100% record.
