At the end of January, Varsity squads are announced and from that point onwards the training intensifies and Varsity becomes the main focus.
I was picked in the 2nd team preliminary Varsity squad to play Marjon’s 2nd team. I am very excited about the prospect about playing Varsity again and feel very lucky to have been given the opportunity to play again in this fixture.
We started off by training twice a week as we were before but in the last 2 weeks we have started doing 2 fitness sessions a week and 2 Skill sessions a week. We have been doing our fitness sessions in Nancy Astor Sports Centre tailored to Rugby, for example, we have done plyometric and agility training. We have also looked at strength and condition in these sessions. In the Skills sessions we have been targeting our team plays, as forwards we have focused on making sure our line outs are perfect and everyone in the squads understands all the calls.
Both the 1st and 2nd team games take place on the 13th March. The 1st team are playing at Brickfields at 18:30, which will bring a very big crowd from both Plymouth University and Marjon University. The 2nd team are playing earlier on the day on the 13th March at the Rectory Ground, in Devonport. The 2nd team game will attract a decent sized crowd with all the 1st tem players watching and friends of the players coming to watch as well.
I am looking forward to this day very much and hope that similar to last year I can play a big part in getting the 2nd team to beat Marjon again.
